For the past several months, Bulacan-based manufacturer Mighty Corp was dragged in the controversies in which its rival company PMFTC over the low priced cigarette brands that the company selling in the market.
The Lucio Tan-owned tobacco business, also have issues over the merger that they didn’t announced it publicly. Mighty has an initiative to reach out to other people. Like what they did for the farmers in the Ilocos region, they purchase tobacco leaves and gave incomes to their families.
According to Mighty executive vice president Oscar Barrientos,
“Recent moves by our competitors, particularly a multinational company, against MC indicate a calibrated campaign to bring us to our knees and push us out of the picture”. It was desperate act by the rival company. Mighty stands firm on the positive outcome of the sales of their products.
According to Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said,“It is natural for Philip Morris to fight change because you want to keep your monopolistic position. But in this environment, why should we, as a country, allow a monopoly?” PMFTC dominates the tobacco industry almost 90% of the market today. That’s why Mighty Corp want to prove to the people behind the tobacco industry that they are wholly-owned Filipino company which founded almost seven centuries ago.
With the accusation of technical smuggling, tax evasion and lawsuit in the United States, Barrientos added, “These baseless and malicious accusations merely mask the real agenda of our competitor which is to kill off all other local brands, especially the low-priced ones.” As Mighty comply with the New Sin Tax law, why do the other companies still spreading lies about the company? Are they threatened over what did Wongchuking-owned tobacco manufacturing company making the consumer buy their products?
Meanwhile, Barrientos also said that a foreign-dominated monopoly of the market was geared towards promoting mid-market brands since profit margins in the low-cost brand category were low.“They want to kill off all remaining low-cost local brands in the market by hook or by crook so that the playing field will be cleared for their expensive foreign brands”. Buy and support Filipino-made products, instead of those foreign brands in the market. It will help our economy to grow, and became known in other countries.
Barrientos said that the company would like address all the accusations hurled against it and exhaust all legal means to stave off the monopoly’s alleged efforts to kill off other local brands that it has not yet acquired.“We’ll fight them for sure. It’s an uphill battle, but we cannot and will not allow a foreign bully to just trample on us and any other Filipino company that it views as a threat to its campaign for market domination. As big as our competitor is, it’s a shame that it has to resort to lies and deceit,” he said.
